Biography

Selim Bingol is senior vice president and chief communications officer at Duke Energy. Selim is responsible for directing Duke Energy’s communications strategy and services, including internal and external communications support for business segments, media relations, executive communications, brand management and digital communications. He assumed his current position in January 2015.

Previously, Selim served as senior vice president of global communications at General Motors Co. In this role, he led all communications, measurably improving the company’s reputation among stakeholders as it emerged from bankruptcy and the “Government Motors” era. Key areas of accountability included executive positioning, media relations, employee/labor communications for 200,000 employees worldwide, financial media relations including earnings reports and analyst events, and corporate philanthropy as chair of the GM Foundation.

In his prior corporate role, Selim was senior vice president of corporate communications at AT&T, where he led the public relations organization of what was then the world’s largest telecom company through one of the most dynamic periods in its history. This included multibillion-dollar mergers and acquisitions, roll out of national broadband DSL service, the introduction of U-Verse television service, and the creation of Cingular Wireless in partnership with BellSouth. His specific functional leadership roles included employee communications, executive positioning, media relations, investor relations, and special events.

During his career, Selim has held senior partner positions at Fleishman-Hillard Communications, one of the world’s largest public relations agencies. Most recently, he returned to run the agency’s San Antonio office upon the retirement of AT&T CEO/Chairman Ed Whitacre and built a million-dollar business with clients like Visa. Earlier, he served on site at SBC Communications managing the telecom company’s corporate communications function and handling roles as corporate spokesman, speechwriter, CEO media relations and public affairs media.

Earlier in his career, Selim worked with one of the industry’s leading grassroots advocacy firms, and was press secretary for then-U.S. Rep. Jon Kyl (R-Az.) in Washington, D.C.

A graduate of the University of Virginia, Selim and his wife, Julie, have three daughters.
