Organizations do not need project managers who check boxes or manage tasks.  They need project managers  who lead projects efficiently, adapt to technological advancements, and drive successful outcomes.  “Project managers turn visions into reality. They take what sounds like an impossible goal and break it down until it is possible,” explained Academic Director Rich Rinaldi, PMP, A-CSM, A-CSPO.

Why is a Master’s in Project Management Worth It?

For skilled project managers, the future is bright with opportunities. The Project Management Institute (PMI) estimates that employers will need to fill around 2.2 million project-oriented roles each year through 2027. This is partly fueled by a wave of retirements among experienced professionals, which creates a prime opportunity for emerging and mid-career talent to step in with the right skills. Academic Director Rich Rinaldi, PMP, A-CSM, A-CSPO A Master of Project Management (MPM) covers the full spectrum of leadership, strategy, and interpersonal skills needed for today’s complex environments. At Wake Forest University School of Professional Studies, our online Master of Project Management program is designed to help professionals build advanced capabilities from resolving team conflicts and navigating cross-cultural communication to leading remote or hybrid teams. “An MPM is laser-focused on the art and science of managing projects,” said Rich. “You’ll master skills in scheduling, risk management, team leadership, and more. It prepares you to tackle the challenges of bringing ideas to life, whether it’s a new product, a software system, or a major strategic initiative.”   >>Want to the know difference between an MPM and an MBA? What are the Benefits to a Master’s in Project Management?

Here are seven key ways that an MPM will help you advance your career as a project manager:

1. Develop Advanced Leadership Skills

Project management is about more than schedules and budgets—it’s about leadership.  In our digital world, human touch and connection are more important than ever to help motivate teams and get projects over the finish line. This requires leadership and communication capabilities that:

  • Manage relationships with stakeholders.
  • Resolve conflict successfully when needed.
  • Build rapport and trust based on empathy and collaboration.
  • Managing virtual teams and fostering collaboration in remote environments.

An MPM helps you develop the leadership skills needed to manage projects successfully and advance into senior roles.

2. Stay Ahead with AI and Data Analytics

The integration of artificial intelligence (AI) and data analytics into project management is revolutionizing how projects are planned and executed.  Wake Forest’s MPM program places a strong emphasis on these cutting-edge technologies, equipping students with the knowledge to leverage AI-driven insights, optimize workflows, and make data-informed decisions. Understanding how to use AI tools and interpret analytics will give you a significant edge in a rapidly evolving job market.

3. Gain a Competitive Edge with Industry Certifications

Professional certifications such as the Certified Associate in Project Management (CAPM) and the Project Management Professional (PMP) credential are highly valued by employers. They validate your ability to lead projects and manage teams effectively. There are also long-term financial benefits associated with professional certifications. For example, PMP-certified professionals report a median salary of $123,000, compared to $93,000 for those without the credential. The Wake Forest MPM program offers structured support, including coursework and resources, to help PMI ATP Certification students prepare for these industry-recognized certifications. As an Authorized Training Partner (ATP) for PMI, we are uniquely qualified to deliver the best-in-class content to help you gain your PMP certification. As part of the program, Wake Forest School of Professional Studies (SPS) supports you in obtaining your Master’s degree and optional preparation for up to two certified industry-recognized certifications (CAPM or PMP, and Professional ScrumMaster). Elective course options include:

PMI ATP Certification

  • PMP Certification Preparation: This prep course is for students with at least three years of project management experience. Unlike all other program courses, PMP 757 is an online synchronous course (a requirement of PMI’s ATP program).
  • CAPM Certification Preparation: This prep course is for students with less than three years of project management experience and is offered asynchronously.
  • ScrumMaster Leadership Preparation: This course will prepare students for the Professional ScrumMaster certification exam offered by scrum.org.

4. Expand Your Career Opportunities

Project management skills are in demand across industries, including healthcare, finance, information technology, construction, and government. An MPM prepares you to take on leadership roles in diverse sectors.  Our Program Advisory Board is made up of industry professionals from banking, healthcare, consulting, building automation, and more. Their insights help to create a comprehensive curriculum that ensures you develop the expertise to oversee complex projects, manage risks effectively, and deliver results that align with organizational goals.

5. Increase Your Earning Potential

Earning an MPM can open the door to greater responsibility and higher compensation within your organization. With advanced training, you’ll be better positioned to step into more strategic roles and tackle complex initiatives.  An MPM better equips you to:

  • Advance into senior leadership roles.
  • Lead larger teams.
  • Oversee higher-budget projects.

These opportunities are associated with an increase in compensation For example, a recent PMI survey found that moving into a senior project management position often comes with a salary bump of at least $10,000.
