Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department Deputy Chief Zeru Chickoree began his career with CMPD on December 2nd, 1998 as a member of the 129th Recruit Class. He has served with CMPD for over 25 years and has worked a variety of assignments during that time. Some key roles include being assigned with the Street Crimes Task Force in 2007, and being an instructor at the Police Training Academy specializing in Subject Control & Arrest Techniques. After being promoted to Sergeant in 2011, he was the Entertainment District Unit supervisor in uptown Charlotte in 2012, as well as a Focus Mission Team or Street Crimes supervisor in the Hickory Grove Division. He was promoted to Lieutenant in January of 2015 and was assigned to the Metro Division and also served in Operations Command before being assigned as the Executive Officer for then Deputy Chief Johnny Jennings. He was promoted to the rank of Captain in November of 2018 and was assigned to the Freedom Division where his division was recognized for the highest crime reduction in 2019. He was subsequently reassigned as the Executive Officer for now Chief of Police Johnny Jennings and was promoted to the rank of Major in February 2022. He was reassigned to the training academy and oversaw the department’s initiatives for Recruitment and Training in May of 2023. CMPD is currently experiencing record numbers of recruit applications and back-to-back large recruit classes. He was promoted to the rank of Deputy Chief in November of 2023 and is currently assigned to the Learning and Wellness Service Group where he continues to oversee the departments Recruitment and Training Bureau and the new Office of Employee Wellness.
